Threshold to 3-D

The 3-dimentional space is my long aspired dreamland. The difficulty for me lies in the “style” which I insisted that it should conform to my painting. But there existed almost no concrete shapes or signs in my painting that can be used as a prototype. Later on when I was uncertain in processing my prints, I used to paint on the acrylic panels to try it out. This findings inspired me to put several pieces of transparent panels together to form a colorful cube.(Figure 1) It was so charming with light from the back only the acrylic panel is not suitable to outdoors for its poor weatherproof nature.

After the unsuccessful attempt, I found the texture of iron plate was fascinating. 1n 1995, I cut iron plate in 30cm square with a 4cm welded edge and then painted on the surface of it. (Figure 2)

In an occasional case, when I made a floor lamp with a piece of iron sheet, my eyes were caught by its appealing look. With only several cuttings and folds a certain shape was created. This provided me with a good idea to transfer my painting into 3-D works. Here is my principle: It should be shaped from a piece of iron sheet and the finished work should be able to return to the original piece theoretically. After the shape is formed, I can paint on it. This could be an excellent idea only my principle bogged me down in difficulties when actual work is enlarged to a considerable extent. With the expansion of size, thickness of the plate should be thickened and it makes the process of bending and “weaving” impossible. As a result, such 3-D work still remains a model so far.
